Buffalo City Municipality – In a spirited celebration of Youth Day, more than 30 soccer teams from the rural areas of Buffalo City gathered for a dynamic three-day tournament held from June 14 to June 16. The event, which drew teams from communities such as Ncerha and Tsholomnqa, was a lively tribute to the legacy of the youth of 1976.
The tournament, organized by local community leader Mziyanda Mpani, brought rural youth together in a positive, sporting environment. “This tournament was about more than just soccer,” said Mpani. “It was held in commemoration of Youth Day – to remember the courage of the youth of 1976, and to inspire today’s youth to build their communities through unity and perseverance.”
The event was proudly sponsored by Caltex Kidds Beach Fuels, whose support ensured the successful running of the tournament. Media coverage and community support were provided by Icamagu Community Media Projects, who were on the ground throughout the event, documenting the games and amplifying the voices of the youth.
Mr. Thembekile Totana of Icamagu Community Media Projects praised the initiative, saying: “Supporting this tournament is part of our mission to uplift and empower rural youth. Community-led projects like this are essential in building pride, confidence, and opportunity among our young people.”
After fierce competition and memorable matches, the Arsenal team of Tsholomnqa emerged as the champions of the tournament, lifting the coveted trophy to the cheers of proud supporters.
The tournament was not only a display of football talent, but also a showcase of rural youth resilience and potential. Organizers have expressed their hopes that this annual event will continue to grow, bringing more opportunities for development and community celebration in Buffalo City’s rural heartlands.
