Kidds Beach Police Station has embarked on a heightened safety campaign aimed at curbing crime and ensuring road compliance through a series of roadblocks along the R72 route between KuGompo City and Port Alfred.
The operation, which began earlier this week, is a collaborative effort involving the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Hawks Directorate, and the Department of Roads and Transport. Authorities say the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to address rising concerns over criminal activities, including vehicle-related crimes and the transportation of illegal goods along this busy coastal corridor.
Motorists travelling along the R72 have experienced increased visibility of law enforcement officials, with vehicles being stopped and searched, and documentation thoroughly checked. Officers have also been conducting compliance inspections, focusing on roadworthiness, licensing, and driver sobriety.
One of the officials in the operation emphasized the importance of the operation in safeguarding communities. “These roadblocks are not meant to inconvenience law-abiding citizens, but rather to protect them. We are working closely with our partners to ensure that those who use our roads do so responsibly and within the confines of the law. Criminals must know that there is no room to operate freely in our jurisdiction,” said the official.
However, not all motorists have welcomed the initiative. One visibly frustrated driver, who declined to be named, expressed anger after being asked to submit his vehicle for inspection. “This is harassment. I have places to be, and now I must wait while they go through my car for no reason. I haven’t done anything wrong, so why should I be treated like a criminal?” the motorist complained before eventually complying under protest.
Despite such resistance, officials remain firm that the operation will continue as planned, noting that public cooperation is essential in the fight against crime.Authorities have urged motorists to remain patient and comply with law enforcement officers, reiterating that the campaign is ultimately for the safety and well-being of all road users.
The joint operation is expected to continue over the coming weeks, with sporadic roadblocks and increased patrols anticipated along key routes in the region.
