The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), in collaboration with the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, conducted a Pre-State of the Nation Address (Pre-SONA) activation at Ndende Bhashe Taxi Rank in East London. The outreach programme formed part of government’s efforts to educate and raise awareness among members of the public about the upcoming State of the Nation Address (SONA), scheduled to take place on 12 February 2026.
During the activation, GCIS officials, together with representatives from the Department of Labour, engaged directly with commuters to gather their views and expectations on the key issues they believe should be prioritised by the President in his address.Members of the public used the opportunity to voice their concerns, with many highlighting the growing unemployment crisis, particularly among young people.
Commuters called on the President to present clear and practical solutions aimed at job creation and economic opportunities for the youth.Additional issues raised included the need for improved access to social housing and more efficient service delivery. Some commuters expressed frustration over government services that they feel are not reaching many South Africans.
GCIS officials said the Pre-SONA activation is an important platform that allows ordinary citizens to share their views and contribute to national dialogue ahead of the President’s address.—
