The Eastern Cape’s District and Metro monitoring teams have fanned out across the province to ensure the safety of initiates during the 2025 Summer Customary Male Initiation season. This comes just two weeks into the official start of the season, with authorities intensifying efforts to safeguard the passage of boys into manhood.
Cogta MEC Zolile Williams confirmed that monitoring operations are in full swing, describing the teams’ efforts as crucial in reducing risks linked to negligence by some parents and unlawful practices at initiation sites.
“Twenty-one people have been arrested for illegal circumcision. We commend our teams and the SAPS for stamping the authority of our government against law breakers,” said MEC Williams.
He raised further concern about illegal initiation schools operating in parts of the province, while acknowledging those who continue to follow proper procedures and comply with the law.
“Let the law take its course against those who break it, without fear or favour – including errant parents,” he added.
Despite intensive monitoring and awareness campaigns, the province has recorded five deaths so far: one in Buffalo City Metro, two in Chris Hani District, and two in OR Tambo District.
The Chairperson of the Eastern Cape House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders, Nkosi Langa Miza Gwadiso, expressed deep concern over one of the deaths in Chris Hani District, allegedly involving hanging.
“Let the police investigate the matter to bring closure to the parents and family of the deceased,” said Nkosi Gwadiso.
He described the deaths as disappointing, especially after extensive community outreach programmes such as training sessions and the Imbizo yamadoda, which sought to promote safe initiation practices.
Nkosi Gwadiso encouraged monitoring teams to remain steadfast.
“They must not be discouraged but continue working tirelessly to mitigate risks until the season ends. We send our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” he said.
