Eastern Cape – A 32-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of her three-year-old daughter after allegedly transporting the child’s lifeless body in a suitcase from Mzamba to the Mbizana police station, police confirmed on Monday, 19 May 2025.
According to Eastern Cape police spokespersons, the suspect arrived at the Mbizana police station—approximately 30 kilometres from her home—with the suitcase and reported the death herself. Inside, officers discovered the body of the toddler.
Preliminary investigations suggest the woman left her daughter unattended at their Mzamba home on Sunday, 18 May, while she visited her boyfriend. Upon returning the following day, she claimed to have found the child unresponsive near the door of the house.
Rather than contacting emergency services or the police immediately, the woman allegedly placed the body in a suitcase and boarded public transport to Mbizana.
She was arrested at the police station shortly after presenting the suitcase and has been charged with culpable homicide, child neglect, and defeating the ends of justice.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Mbizana Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 21 May 2025.
Police investigations are ongoing.
