GQEBERHA, 30 July 2025 — A coordinated police operation in the Eastern Cape has uncovered and confiscated a large cache of illicit pharmaceuticals and suspected counterfeit goods valued at an estimated R2.2 million, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.

Acting on intelligence from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Sea Border Office, a multi-disciplinary team swooped down on two premises in Korsten, Gqeberha — a wholesale outlet on Durban Road and a warehouse on Daisy Road — in a targeted strike against transnational criminal networks.

The raid, conducted on Wednesday, 30 July, involved members of Border Policing (CDSI Airport), the K9 Unit, Crime Intelligence, and brand-holder agents. The operation forms part of SAPS’ ongoing strategy to disrupt the distribution of unlicensed and potentially hazardous goods entering the South African market.

Among the seized items were:

  • 17,430 Viagra pills
  • 224 Viagra Jelly sachets
  • 2,640 Adcodol tablets
  • 6,480 Apetito tablets
  • 3,560 pregnancy test kits
  • 4,680 skin-whitening creams
  • 648 Colgate toothbrushes
  • 1,584 Kiwi Shoe Polish units
  • 106 rodent traps

The full estimated street value of the haul is pegged at R2.2 million.

SAPS spokespersons reported that the operation was executed without any injuries, arrests, or damage to property. Although no suspects were apprehended at the scene, investigations are ongoing.

SAPS is now working closely with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and brand holders to verify the authenticity of the seized products and trace their origin.

“This operation sends a clear message that law enforcement is actively closing in on networks profiting from illegal goods that pose a risk to public health and safety,” said a SAPS official close to the investigation.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on illicit trade and urged the public to report suspicious commercial activity in their communities.
