PRETORIA – President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation on Sunday, 13 July 2025, at 19:00, to speak on significant national security concerns following explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The upcoming presidential address was confirmed by the Presidency on Wednesday, amid growing public interest and political pressure sparked by the Commissioner’s media briefing on 6 July.
General Mkhwanazi, speaking to the media in Durban while President Ramaphosa was abroad attending the BRICS Summit in Brazil, laid out serious allegations implicating senior figures within both the South African Police Service (SAPS) and high-ranking political leaders. The precise nature of the allegations remains undisclosed, but sources suggest they pertain to corruption, abuse of power, and alleged interference in law enforcement operations.
In response, the President has reportedly engaged in intensive consultations upon his return from Brazil, recognising the implications of the revelations for the country’s national security and institutional integrity.
“President Ramaphosa has been seized with this matter in recent days and will, following various consultations, take the nation into his confidence,” read the official statement issued by the Presidency.
Sunday’s national address will be broadcast live on all major television and radio stations, as well as streamed across digital platforms.
As the country awaits further details, there is mounting speculation about the potential political fallout and the steps government may take to address the allegations.
The Presidency has urged the public to tune in to the address, which may outline critical interventions aimed at protecting the rule of law and restoring public trust in key institutions.
This is a developing story.
