Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has extended warm congratulations to 18-year-old Akhile Esethu Mdlalane, a matriculant at Cambridge High School, for her exceptional achievements both on and off the sports field. Akhile, who was recently named captain of the Border U19 Cricket team, has established herself as a rising star in South African sports.
Premier Mabuyane praised Akhile for her hard work and dedication, highlighting her as a symbol of hope for the youth of the province. “Her journey is a beacon of hope for young people across the province, showing the power of talent, hard work, and opportunity. Congratulations to Akhile, the province is proud of her, and we look forward to witnessing more of her incredible achievements in the future,” Mabuyane said.
Akhile’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Balancing academics and a thriving sports career, she has excelled in both hockey and cricket at provincial and national levels. Among her many accolades, Akhile represented South Africa at the Mirnawan Tournament in Malaysia last year, with the support of the Eastern Cape government under Premier Mabuyane’s sponsorship.
Her hockey career includes representing provincial teams at U13, U16, U17, and U18 levels. She has also been a member of the U16 and U17 South African Schools Hockey Teams and was recently selected for the South African Schools Hockey Team for 2024.
In cricket, Akhile has been equally impressive, playing at the provincial level from 2019 to 2024 and captaining the U16 provincial cricket team from 2021 to 2022.
The Eastern Cape government reiterated its commitment to supporting young talent in the province and called on the private sector to join forces in creating more opportunities for youth. “Through partnerships and continued investment in young talent, we can help more individuals like Akhile reach their full potential in sports and other fields,” Mabuyane said.
Akhile’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, talent, and community support, inspiring countless young people across the province to dream big and work hard.
