Young people of the Easter Cape Province in the community of Ncerha near East London mobilized themselves on Saturday in calling for drastic actions in addressing climate change. The youth under the banner of Isithembiso Multi-purpose organization met at the Ncerha Resource Centre to raise awareness on the impact of climate change in rural areas.
A speaker after speaker called for government and business corporations to prioritize the health of the planet and its future by supporting youth-led initiatives on dealing with climate change. One other aspect raised was the planting of trees and recycling of unwanted thrash as part of these initiatives. Mr. Ludwe Majiza of Vunikhaya Permaculture has pleaded with the youth to understand climate change and its dynamics. Climate change is not only affecting people in urban areas, rural areas are the most victims because of their livelihood. We can do better as young people through our tireless efforts to tackle climate change through creative ideas and innovative technologies. People should understand that climate change is not environmental crisis but also a social justice issue “said Majiza”.
Speaking at the event Mr. Zamile Thandi who is a young recycling activist in Buffalo City asked for young to start similar projects by ensuring that they do away with illegal dumping sites. Although schools play a major part in teaching recycling, environmental education starts right where you stay. Today I make a call to all the parents to instill responsible practices to their children at home. This can be done in a number of ways, from explaining to kids the basics of selective recycling and teaching them various ways of reducing waste around the homes said “Thandi”.
The event organizer Miss Xoli Khoncoshe hailed the event as a huge success. The fact that young people came in large number shows that they consider climate change to be a threat to our environment ” she said”
