Kidd’s Beach, South Africa – The Kidd’s Beach Police Station, in collaboration with Icamagu Community Radio, hosted a vibrant sports day on Sunday to raise awareness about Gender-Based Violence (GBV) during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. The event drew community members of all ages to the Mpongo Sports Grounds eTsholomnqa for a day filled with activities promoting unity and advocacy against GBV.

The day featured soccer matches, netball games, and family-friendly activities aimed at fostering community spirit while delivering a strong message about the need to combat violence against women and children. Informative sessions and resource booths were also set up to provide participants with information about GBV, reporting channels, and support structures.

A Warrant Officer from Kidd’s Beach Police Station emphasized the importance of community engagement in tackling gender-based violence. “This event is not just about sports. It’s about creating a safe space where the community can unite against the scourge of violence. As the police, we are here to enforce the law, but we also need to partner with community members to create a culture of respect and accountability.”

Mr. Lulama kaSozathini, Founder of Icamagu Community Radio, highlighted the critical role of media in addressing societal issues. “As a community radio station, we are committed to using our platform to amplify the voices of survivors and provide educational content that challenges harmful norms. By availing our resources, we hope to empower communities to take a stand and break the cycle of violence.”

Attendees were moved by the impactful speeches, with many expressing their gratitude for the platform provided to discuss such a pressing issue. Local youth also participated enthusiastically in the sports activities, underscoring the event’s goal of engaging the younger generation in the fight against GBV.

One participant, Ms. Zintle Mlawu, shared her thoughts: “It’s inspiring to see so many people coming together for such an important cause. Events like this remind us that we all have a role to play in ending violence in our communities.”

The sports day concluded with a pledge from community leaders to continue working towards a violence-free society and a reminder that the fight against GBV extends beyond the 16 days of activism. Both SAPS Kidd’s Beach and Icamagu Community Radio expressed their commitment to sustaining these efforts year-round.
